EKG & Diagnostic Point-of-Care Ultrasound
In-office EKG and bedside ultrasound that bring real diagnostic answers into your visit — for faster results, fewer separate appointments, and real-time conversations about what we're seeing — serving Northville, Plymouth, Canton, and Livonia.
Some questions about your heart and body don't need a separate trip to a cardiology office or an imaging center; they can be answered right here, often in the same visit. At TheMDClinic in Northville, MI, we use in-office EKGs and portable ultrasound to get real diagnostic information on the spot, with you watching alongside us as we go.
In-Office EKG
An EKG (electrocardiogram) is a quick, painless test that records your heart's electrical activity, and we perform it directly in the office rather than sending you elsewhere for something that takes only a few minutes. It's especially useful for evaluating symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or fainting, for establishing a cardiac baseline before starting certain medications that can affect heart rhythm or before a surgical procedure, and for monitoring known heart conditions over time. Worth knowing: national guidelines specifically recommend against routine EKG screening in patients without symptoms or relevant risk factors, so we use this test when it's actually indicated, not as a default add-on to every visit.
What Bedside Ultrasound (POCUS) Is, and What It Isn't
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a focused, bedside ultrasound exam used to answer a specific clinical question, not a substitute for a full formal imaging study when one is genuinely needed. Think of it as an extension of the physical exam: instead of relying only on listening and feeling, we can look, right there in the room, and talk through what we're seeing with you in real time.
Bedside Ultrasound Focus Areas
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening
For men aged 65 to 75 who have ever smoked, a one-time ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm is a recommended preventive test, and we can perform it directly in the office rather than sending you elsewhere for a brief scan that takes just a few minutes.
Blood Clot (DVT) Evaluation
If you're experiencing leg swelling, pain, or warmth that raises concern for a blood clot, we can perform a focused bedside ultrasound to look for one directly, often avoiding an unnecessary trip to the emergency room for a question that can frequently be answered at this visit. This bedside scan is a fast, valuable triage tool, but it isn't always the final word: depending on your risk level, a negative result here may still call for a follow-up formal ultrasound within the week to be thorough, since a focused bedside exam doesn't capture everything a complete study does.
Heart and Lung Assessment
For patients with heart failure or related conditions, we can use ultrasound to get a quick look at basic heart function and check for fluid buildup around the heart or in the lungs, helping guide decisions about medication adjustments without needing to order a formal echocardiogram for every routine question.
Bladder and Urinary Assessment
For patients, especially older men, with urinary symptoms or concern for incomplete bladder emptying, we can measure bladder volume directly in the office, which helps guide next steps before considering a urology referral.
Skin and Soft Tissue Evaluation
When it's not clear whether a red, swollen area is a simple skin infection or contains a collection of fluid that needs to be drained, ultrasound can help us tell the difference and decide on the right treatment without guessing.
Procedural Guidance
Ultrasound also plays a direct role in our joint and musculoskeletal injections, helping guide needle placement with more precision and less discomfort than a landmark-based approach alone. (See our Joint & Musculoskeletal Injections page for more.)
What Patients Actually Think of This
This isn't just a convenience for us. In studies looking at how patients experience point-of-care ultrasound in primary care, the large majority felt it improved their visit, and many felt it actually strengthened their relationship with their doctor — being able to see what we're seeing, in real time, tends to make a conversation about your health feel a lot less abstract.
Faster answers, fewer separate trips, more of the conversation happening together. Schedule a visit at TheMDClinic in Northville, MI — proudly serving Plymouth, Canton, and Livonia.
