Weight Loss & GLP-1 Management
Medically supervised, judgment-free weight management — including GLP-1 medications — built on an ongoing relationship with your own doctor, not a one-time online questionnaire — serving Northville, Plymouth, Canton, and Livonia.
GLP-1 medications like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) have changed what's possible in weight management — but a prescription is only the beginning. Roughly a third to half of patients who start a GLP-1 stop within a year, often because of side effects, cost, or simply a lack of follow-up. At TheMDClinic in Northville, MI, we treat GLP-1 therapy the same way we treat any chronic condition: with an actual relationship, structured ongoing monitoring, and a doctor who's still there for you in month eight, not just the first prescription.
Why Your Prescriber Actually Matters
A growing number of telehealth platforms will prescribe a GLP-1 after a brief questionnaire, with little ongoing contact afterward. Physicians and major medical societies have increasingly raised concerns about this model — citing overprescribing and a lack of continuity, follow-up, and dose titration as the most common risks. Obesity is a chronic disease, and like any chronic disease, it benefits from a doctor who knows your full health picture and stays involved over time, not a transaction that ends once the prescription ships.
Are You a Candidate?
GLP-1 medications for weight management are FDA-approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. Before prescribing, we review your full health history and screen for contraindications, including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or a related hereditary condition called MEN2, which this medication class isn't appropriate for. We'll work through your history, current medications, and goals together to determine whether a GLP-1 is an appropriate and safe option for you, or whether a different approach makes more sense.
FDA-Approved Medications, Prescribed Responsibly
We prescribe FDA-approved medications, including semaglutide (Wegovy), tirzepatide (Zepbound), and liraglutide (Saxenda) — including the newer oral semaglutide tablet for patients who prefer a pill over an injection. We do not prescribe compounded versions of these medications. The FDA and multiple national medical societies have specifically flagged safety concerns with compounded GLP-1s, including inconsistent dosing, contamination risk, and higher rates of adverse events compared to FDA-approved products — we believe the medication itself shouldn't be where you take on unnecessary risk.
A Real Monitoring Schedule, Not an Afterthought
Starting a GLP-1 isn't a one-time decision — it's a gradual process with a real follow-up structure behind it. We see you monthly for the first three months to assess how you're tolerating the medication, adjust your dose, and track your progress, then continue with regular check-ins every three months once you're established on a stable dose. At each visit, we look at more than just the number on the scale: how you're eating, your activity level, your mood, and whether any of your other medications, like blood pressure or diabetes medication, need to be adjusted as your weight changes.
Built Around the Whole Picture, Not Just the Scale
Medication works best as part of a broader plan, not a replacement for one. We pair GLP-1 therapy with the same nutrition and lifestyle support described on our Lifestyle & Fitness Guidance page, and we actively monitor how weight loss is affecting your other chronic conditions, often adjusting or reducing other medications as your numbers improve, so your whole health picture moves forward together instead of in pieces.
What Happens After You Reach Your Goal
Weight regain after stopping a GLP-1 is common, often returning half to two-thirds of lost weight within a year, and it isn't a personal failure. It reflects real metabolic and hormonal changes that happen with weight loss, not a lack of willpower. Most patients need to continue some form of treatment after reaching their goal to maintain it, and we talk honestly about what that looks like for you, whether that means staying on a maintenance dose, adjusting your approach over time, or planning carefully for a structured transition off the medication, so there are no surprises either way.
An Ongoing Relationship, Not a Subscription
This isn't a service you sign up for once and never speak to us again about. We see you for regular, structured follow-up, just like we would for diabetes or high blood pressure, adjusting your plan as your body, your goals, and your life change over time.
