Support for Aging Parents & Seniors
Helping older adults maintain independence while supporting families through medication management, mobility concerns, fall prevention, and long-term care planning — serving Northville, Plymouth, Canton, and Livonia.
Getting older brings real changes — in medications, in mobility, in how much support feels right day to day. At TheMDClinic in Northville, MI, we provide thoughtful, attentive primary care for older adults, with extra time and attention given to the issues that matter most as health needs become more complex. And we know that for many patients, family is part of the picture too — we welcome that involvement and make it easy to include.
Medication Review for Older Adults
Medication lists tend to grow longer with age, often pulled together from multiple specialists over many years. We take the time to review every medication on that list, watching for interactions, doses that may need adjusting as the body changes with age, and medications that may no longer be serving their original purpose. (See our Medication Optimization page for more on this process.)
Fall Prevention
Falls are one of the most common and most preventable causes of injury and loss of independence in older adults. We assess fall risk as a routine part of care — reviewing medications that can affect balance, vision and hearing changes, home safety factors, and muscle strength — and work with you on a practical plan to reduce that risk before a fall happens, not after.
Mobility and Independence
Staying mobile is closely tied to staying independent. We talk openly about changes in strength, balance, and endurance, and help coordinate physical therapy, assistive devices, or other support when it would genuinely help — always with the goal of preserving as much independence as safely possible, not taking it away prematurely.
Bladder Health
Urinary incontinence is common with age and often goes unmentioned unless a doctor asks directly — many patients assume it's just something to live with. It's not always something we can fully resolve, but it's frequently something we can meaningfully improve, whether through simple behavioral strategies, medication review, or referral to urology when appropriate. We ask about it as a normal part of care, not something you have to bring up yourself.
Cognitive and Memory Concerns
Occasional forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, but more significant memory or thinking changes deserve real attention. We assess for cognitive changes as part of routine care, including as part of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit, have honest conversations about what we're seeing, and refer to neurology or a geriatric specialist when a more detailed evaluation is the right next step — keeping that part of the journey connected to your overall care rather than handled in isolation.
Including Family in the Conversation
Many older adults want a family member involved in their care, and we make that easy to set up. If you'd like a son, daughter, or other family member to be able to talk with our office about your care, we can put a HIPAA authorization in place so they're kept in the loop, and we're happy to talk through how a healthcare power of attorney works if that's something your family is considering. Getting this paperwork in place before it's urgently needed makes everything easier down the road.
Planning Ahead, Together
Long-term care planning isn't about predicting the worst — it's about making sure your wishes are known and your family isn't left guessing during a difficult moment. We're glad to have these conversations early and revisit them over time, and to coordinate with elder law attorneys, care managers, or other specialists when more detailed planning support is helpful.
A Doctor Who Has Time for the Whole Conversation
Aging-related concerns rarely fit neatly into a rushed visit. We build in the time these conversations actually need, and when something is beyond what primary care can address — a complex dementia workup, a specialized geriatric assessment — we coordinate that referral and stay involved, rather than handing it off and stepping away.
